The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery performs annually around 250 adult cardiac and thoracic operations. Our program at Harbor-UCLA is one of the few General Surgery Residency programs in the country where residents rotate on the cardiothoracic surgery service at the junior and senior levels. Residents on this rotation become very comfortable in taking care of critical patients, as well as interpretation and management of their hemodynamic parameters. Residents are actively involved in the operating room, they become very familiar with cardiac and thoracic anatomy, and under direct supervision, perform some of the procedures on this service. They also get exposed to some of the newer minimally invasive modalities in heart surgery using catheter based interventions in valve repair or replacement, as well as video assisted thoracic surgery and robotic assisted thoracic surgery. The experience and knowledge they gain on this rotation helps them become very comfortable in the operative management of thoracic trauma and other procedures involving the chest. In addition to the usual coronary artery bypass and valve surgery, our division also manages a wide variety of adult cardiac surgery including endocarditis, aortic aneurysms and dissections, cardiac tumors and pulmonary embolism, and we are involved in some clinical research studies.
