Division of Oncology / HPB / Endocrine

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center has a long-standing history of providing cancer care for a broad range of malignancies. There are nearly 1000 new cancer cases diagnosed at Harbor-UCLA every year. Harbor-UCLA Medical Center has been a Commission on Cancer (CoC)-accredited comprehensive academic cancer program since 1950. The Division of Surgical Oncology has a wide scope encompassing the care of breast, endocrine, hepaticopancreaticobiliary (HPB), gastrointestinal (GI), peritoneal and soft tissue/skin malignancies. Throughout Harbor-UCLA’s outstanding and long history of providing cancer care, the Division of Surgical Oncology continues to play a leadership role in our multi-disciplinary approach to the care of cancer patients.

In recent years, the Division has developed programs allowing advancements in the field of surgical oncology to be offered to our patients. We are one of the few sites in the greater Los Angeles area that offers intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) for early stage breast cancer as well as cytoreduction surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for peritoneal malignancies. In addition, the faculty of the Surgical Oncology Division have been actively involved in developing a robotic surgery program allowing cancer patients with endocrine, HPB and GI malignancies to receive surgery using the new da Vinci Xi robot system. Furthermore, the Surgical Oncology faculty made a commitment to create a comprehensive robotics surgery training program for our general surgery residents so that our residents could participate and achieve autonomy in robotic surgery cases. This vision was quickly made into reality. Currently, junior residents begin as first-assistants on straightforward benign robotic cases while adequately trained senior and chief residents are the primary surgeon on the console for complex general surgery and surgical oncology cases.

Finally, the Surgical Oncology faculty have always been committed to translational and clinical research. The faculty is proud to mentor and work with residents, and we continue to present our research at numerous regional and national meetings. The Division of Surgical Oncology is dedicated to furthering the field of surgical oncology through conducting cutting edge research and providing high-quality, patient-centered care to our cancer patients.
