About Plastic Surgery

The Plastic Surgery Division at Harbor-UCLA performs the full range of reconstructive Plastic Surgery at the highest level: complex soft tissue and bony defects resulting from trauma, tumor excision or necrotizing infection (eg. from flesh-eating bacteria) are routinely treated with skin grafts, adjacent tissue transfer as well as advanced microsurgical free flaps. Areas treated include the head and neck, upper and lower extremity, torso, breast and urogenital region. Breast reconstruction is offered to all mastectomy patients and is performed using implants or microvascular procedures – such as DIEP flaps –depending on the circumstances. Facial fractures and hand trauma comprise a significant part of the service. Specialized procedures performed on the hand and upper extremities involve complex wound coverage, brachial plexus surgery, tendon and nerve transfers and even vascularized muscle free flaps for functional loss. Facial procedures include facial reanimation after Bell’s palsy and bony and soft tissue reconstruction for both traumatic and oncologic defects. Acute and chronic lymphedema are treated with a number of procedures the most advanced of which consist of microvascular lymphatico-venous anastomosis and vascularized lymph node transfer. Recently, the Division has taken up the mantle of gender reassignment in cases of gender dysphoria. Last but not least, the division’s multidisciplinary Craniofacial Clinic treats children with craniofacial anomalies such as cleft lip and palate, microtia, and craniosynostosis.
